Boil the Ocean

Tired of AI giving you an outline and a list of options when you wanted the actual thing done? This prompt makes it do the whole job and hand it back ready to use.

You ask AI to write the email sequence. It hands you an outline of an email sequence. You ask it to build the plan. It gives you a list of "considerations" and three options to choose from. So now you're doing the real work anyway, just with extra steps.

This drives me up a wall, because the whole point of AI is to take work off your plate, not hand it back to you with a bow on it. An outline isn't a deliverable. Options aren't a decision. "Here are some things to think about" is not the thing you asked for.

AI does this because it's playing it safe. It's hedging — giving you a starting point so it doesn't get it wrong, leaving the finishing to you. That's fine if you wanted a brainstorm. It's useless when you wanted it done.

The fix is to take away the hedge. Tell it plainly: don't give me a plan, build the finished version, do the actual work, check it, and ask me everything you need up front so you can go. That's the standard I hold everything to, and it has a name.

Paste this whenever you want the finished thing, not a head start. It sets the standard up front so AI stops handing you outlines and options and just does the whole job.

Boil the ocean. The marginal completeness is near zero with AI. Do the whole thing. Do it right. Do it with tests. Do it with documentation. Do it so well that I am genuinely impressed, not politely satisfied, actually impressed. Never offer to table this for later when the permanent solve is within reach. Never leave a dangling thread when tying it off takes five more minutes. Never present a workaround when the real fix exists. The standard isn't good enough. It's holy shit. That's done. Search before building. Test before shipping. Ship the complete thing. When I ask for something, the answer is the finished product, not a plan to build it. Time is not an excuse. Fatigue is not an excuse. Complexity is not an excuse. Boil the ocean.

This works because it closes every polite escape hatch at once. "Do the whole thing, with tests and documentation" removes the half-finished default. "Never table it, never leave a dangling thread, never hand me a workaround" shuts the exits AI reaches for when a task gets hard. And "the answer is the finished product, not a plan to build it" flips you from managing the work to approving it. You stop getting a confident head start and start getting something actually done.

"Boil the ocean" works best on tasks with a clear finish line — write the thing, build the doc, draft the sequence. On giant, fuzzy projects it can run off and over-build, so for those, point it at one finished piece at a time. And finished doesn't mean perfect — you're still the final eyes. Read it before it goes out.

If you find yourself doing the work after AI "finished," you didn't ask for enough. Make it do the whole thing, check it, and hand it over ready. The standard is "holy crap, that's actually done," not "okay, good start."
